Breast reduction

Breast reduction is a valid option for some people. Due to hereditary traits breasts can grow to an extremely large size at an early age already. Large breasts can exacerbate neck and shoulder pain and sometimes cause skin problems.

Especially in professions involving physical activity (e.g. dancing) large breasts can be awkward. If the symptoms are persistent, breast reduction surgery might be worth considering.

Some women have large breasts due to being overweight. In such cases breast reduction is not enough to attain a well-balanced figure. On the contrary, it may bring out the plump abdomen. The best result could then be achieved by first losing weight. Plastic surgery procedures are not slimming operations.

There are several methods of breast reduction. The main difference between the methods is the direction from which blood supply is provided to the nipple areola.

The method is chosen individually during the consultation. During the surgery the areola area is repositioned. The incisions are usually made around the nipples and vertically down from them. If a large amount of tissue needs to be removed, an anchor-shaped incision is made, which also leaves a crescent-shape scar under the breast.

Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia and the operation takes 3-4 hours.

You will be required to stay overnight at the clinic and will be discharged the following morning; you should have someone to accompany you.

Aftercare

The wounds are not usually painful; however, it is recommended that you take painkillers regularly for 2–3 days following the surgery.

After the surgery the breasts are supported by a soft bra that needs to be worn day and night until the stitches are removed. Once the wounds have healed, you can start wearing a normal bra.

You must avoid physical exertion and sauna bathing after the surgery while the stitches are in (8 days).

The recovery time is about three weeks. You can start exercising gradually two weeks after the surgery.

In order to reduce scar formation we recommend that you wear a Mepiform pressure dressing as long as the scar is red. This will take on average eight months (3–12 months).

Possible problems

Breast reduction surgery may involve common postoperative complications, such as bleeding or wound infection. They are however rare. While effort is made to preserve the blood circulation and sensation of the areolas during the operation, this can sometimes be difficult. If sensation is impaired, it is usually restored within three months; however, in rare cases reduced sensation may persist.

Impaired blood circulation prolongs recovery and may require some minor additional measures. As a rule, they do not make the final result worse.
The ability to breastfeed might be affected after breast reduction surgery. Various surveys show that approx. 50% of women who have undergone breast reduction have problems with breastfeeding.

Due to the high prevalence of breast cancer, mammography is usually performed before a breast surgery and, if required, microscopic (histological) tissue samples are taken during the surgery.

The formation of scars varies from person to person, and with some patients scars can spread regardless of the surgery method and aftercare.
